What are the main function of mitochondria?

Mitochondria play an important role in living cells. It produces and regulates the energy required for all the vital activities of the organism. Energy is essential for keeping every process in action within the living body. This energy is produced during respiration. So, respiration plays a great role to keep the vital process active by producing energy. This energy production during respiration takes place within, mitochondria. For this reason, mitochondria are called the powerhouse of the cell. Mitochondria contain all the enzymes and co-enzymes etc. required for respiration.
