What is software?

Software refers to a set of computer programs and related data that provide instructions for telling a computer what to do and how to do it. The software can be categorized into two main types: system software and application software.

System software, also known as operating software, is the software that controls a computer's resources, such as its memory and processing power, and provides a platform for other software to run on. Examples of system software include operating systems such as Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Application software, on the other hand, is software that performs specific tasks for users, such as word processing, accounting, and gaming. Examples of application software include Microsoft Office, QuickBooks, and Fortnite.

Software is an essential component of modern computing and has a wide range of applications, from personal and business use to scientific research and medical applications.
