What is pressure?

Pressure is a measure of the force exerted on a surface per unit area. It is a scalar quantity expressed in units of force per unit area, such as pascals (Pa), pounds per square inch (psi), atmospheres (atm), or millimeters of mercury (mmHg). Pressure results from the weight of a column of fluid or from applied forces, and it is a key parameter in many scientific and technological fields, including fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and atmospheric science.
