Why is the definite number of chromosome remain unchanged heredity in the somatic cells of higher living beings?

The number of chromosomes is the identity of an organism. Each species has different number of chromosomes. The number of chromosomes should be maintained hereditarily otherwise abnormality will arise. During sexual reproduction of higher living beings, each gamete acquires half of the total chromosomes so that after fertilization the uniqueness of species is maintained in their somatic cells.
