Why do babies spit up?

Babies spit up because their digestive system is still developing and they have a weak lower esophageal sphincter, the muscle that keeps food in the stomach. This can cause partially digested milk or formula to flow back up into the esophagus and out of the mouth, which is known as spitting up or reflux. Spitting up is common in babies and usually harmless, but if your baby is uncomfortable or having difficulty gaining weight, they may have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and may need medical attention. Keeping your baby in an upright position for at least 30 minutes after feeding and burping them frequently can help to minimize spitting up. Consult with your pediatrician if you have concerns about your baby's spitting up.
