What is a groundhog?

A groundhog, also known as a woodchuck, is a burrowing rodent native to North America. It is a type of marmot and is the largest member of the squirrel family. Groundhogs are known for their use in predicting the weather, as a popular folk legend holds that if a groundhog emerges from its burrow on February 2nd (Groundhog Day) and sees its shadow, winter will last for six more weeks, and if it does not, spring will arrive early. Despite its cultural significance, the accuracy of the groundhog's weather prediction is debatable.
