10 types of computer viruses

Types of computer viruses

  1. Trojan horse - A Trojan horse is a type of malware that is disguised as a legitimate software program. When the user downloads and installs the program, the Trojan horse is installed as well and can perform unauthorized actions, such as stealing personal information or destroying data.
  2. Worm - A worm is a type of self-replicating malware that spreads from one computer to another through a network. Unlike viruses, worms do not need to attach themselves to other files in order to spread.
  3. Ransomware - Ransomware is a type of malware that encrypts the user's files and demands a ransom payment in exchange for the decryption key. The encrypted files are unusable until the ransom is paid, and the attacker often threatens to delete the files if the ransom is not paid.
  4. Adware - Adware is a type of software that displays unwanted advertisements on the user's computer. The advertisements are usually displayed in the form of pop-up windows or banners and can slow down the computer or cause it to crash.
  5. Spyware - Spyware is a type of software that is designed to gather information about the user's computer activities without their knowledge or consent. The information gathered by spyware can include personal information, such as passwords, credit card numbers, and browsing history.
  6. Rootkit - A rootkit is a type of malware that is designed to hide from detection by anti-virus software and the operating system. Rootkits can be used to gain unauthorized access to a computer or to hide other malicious software that has been installed on the computer.
  7. File infector - A file infector is a type of virus that infects executable files, such as .exe or .com files. The virus spreads when the infected file is run or opened and can cause the computer to crash or slow down.
  8. Macro virus - A macro virus is a type of virus that infects macro-enabled document files, such as Microsoft Word or Excel files. Macro viruses can be spread when the infected document is opened and the macro code is executed.
  9. Boot sector virus - A boot sector virus is a type of virus that infects the boot sector of a hard drive. The virus is executed when the computer starts up and can cause the computer to crash or slow down.
