What is heavy water?

Heavy water is form of water that contains only deuterium rater than the common hydrogen-1 isotope that makes up most of the hydrogen in normal water.

Formula of Heavy water is D2O (Deuterium Oxide). Heavy water or deuterium oxide is made up of two atoms of deuterium and one atom of oxygen. Deuterium is a stable isotope of hydrogen with double the mass of hydrogen due to presence of an extra neutron in it’s nucleus.

Colour of Heavy Water:

Heavy water is thus colorless. These graphs illustrate why water (H2O) is blue, while ‘heavy water’ is colorless.
